BACKUP & RESTORE OF IIS 6.0 METABASE

IIS metabase configuration file is automatically backup by IIS, but to take manually we need to do following on the IIS server:

Log into the IIS server, select your server and right click go to All Tasks and selectBackup/Restore configuration. :

Here we see that there has been automatic backup made by IIS automatically. To create manually backup click create as shown below:

Give a name of the backup and if you want to set a passcode for the backup click “Encrypt backup using password” as shown below:

Click OK and we will see the backup has been created and listed in the Configuration backup/restore wizard:

Click Close to finish.

Now launch “NTBACKUP” or any other backup tool to take backup of IIS, select “System State” and INETPUB directory in your root folder and start the backup operation.

To restore the same, you need to restore from the backup and Once restore complete it will prompt you to restart the system. Once server restart you need to restore the IIS metabase file from the backup which you have taken manually:

Once you click restore, you will be prompt for a message, read it and click Yes to continue

It will prompt passcode to continue. Enter your password which you have set during the metabase backup process:

We will get the message that it completed successfully.

We have successfully backup and restore the IIS metabase configuration file.
